Resident Membership

Several resources will extend beyond graduation to help with board preparation:

• The PREP® The Curriculum online package is available through December 31st of your graduation year with the following access:
  • PREP Self-Assessment online access and CME credit can be claimed for three years after initial publication date. Full-text online access to Pediatrics in Review® content (for years in which subscriptions were purchased) is available in perpetuity.
• Continue to manage your Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) through PediaLink®.
• Financial Wellness series on Credit & Credit Score, Retirement Planning, Debt & Money Management, and more!

Continue to receive the same benefits as you did during residency. Many residency programs pay for membership dues for chief residents.

Following graduation you will be invoiced as a candidate member, unless you notify us that you are continuing training as a chief resident.

Graduating resident/chief resident members are invoiced in the spring for 1 of 2 member categories, Fellowship Trainee Member or Candidate Member.

Take advantage of reduced rates for trainees throughout fellowship and continue to be a member of the Section on Pediatric Trainees (SOPT) for no additional dues. In addition to valuable content and resources like PREP, membership also offers access to Individual Learning Plans (ILP) and much more. Many fellowship programs pay for membership, so make sure to ask your program director.

Unless you have notified us of fellowship training, all graduating residents become Candidates and receive a 50% discount.

Candidate Members who become board certified will automatically transition to the Fellow category at the next renewal cycle. Let us know if you’d like to be a Fellow before your next renewal.

Graduating residents who are board certified may bypass the candidate member year and be upgraded to Fellow to receive these additional benefits:

• Opportunity to hold national office
• AAP Fellow Certificate
• Right to serve on national committees
• Free year in the Section on Early Career Physicians (SOECP) (New Fellows only)

Join sections and/or councils based on your member type and established criteria (Some additional dues may apply).

Sections are groups within AAP that advance their respective special interests through policy development, education, and advocacy for children. Members within each section guide AAP policies, clinical reports, and practice standards, and act as AAP representatives to other organizations. Each section presents leadership opportunities through an elected executive committee and many appointed sub-committees.

Councils represent the evolution of committees and sections working in the same field into an integrated structure. Like sections, they generate policy, create educational programming and resources, develop and promote advocacy initiatives, support translation of policy and education into practice, and integrate and evaluate these efforts to maximize impact.

Get involved and enhance your leadership skills by participating in state chapters. Shape the development and implementation of child health policy and advocate at the state and local levels through one of our 59 US chapters. Members in each chapter establish legislative priorities and volunteer their efforts to see them through. Chapters partner with other organizations in each state to advance children’s health and well-being.

Update Your Contact Information

Please remember to update your current mailing and email addresses to receive benefits after leaving your training program. Log on with your AAP ID # or contact customer service at 866 843 2271 as soon as you know your new address. Make sure to change your .edu email address to a more permanent email. We also encourage you to provide us with updates on your education, board certification, and personal & professional demographic information

Employer Paid Membership Dues

When you are interviewing for a fellowship and/or practice position, make sure that you ask whether your membership dues would be paid for by the institution/employer. This agreement can be worked into your employment contract.

Section on Early Career Physicians

The Section on Early Career Physicians (SOECP) is your home for topics and issues relating to re-locating, starting in practice, learning how to navigate the AAP, and much more. You can join the SOECP for only $10 per year. To join, visit aap.org/getinvolved. Newly boarded members are given a free year in the SOECP.

Mentorship is one of the most important tools for professional development and has been linked to greater productivity, career advancement, and professional satisfaction. The AAP recognizes that mentorship is critical in helping to nurture and grow our future leaders. $100,000 in Guaranteed Life Insurance

As a graduating resident, you received $100,000 in guaranteed life insurance and $1,000 per month of disability income for one year, paid for by the AAP Group Insurance Trust. Rates are available for AAP members only. Beginning in 2018, a 10% premium credit will be available for all new and existing policy holders!

When will I be billed? An explanation of your first bill.

Your 12-month membership begins the day your payment is processed. This is called “anniversary billing.” Renewal invoices are mailed four months prior to your membership expiration. If your residency program typically paid your dues during the summer, then your first invoice should arrive in the spring.

How do I pay my dues?

First, it is important that the AAP has up-to-date contact information to reach you. Your invoice will be sent to you via US mail and email. Once you receive your invoice, you have three options for paying your dues:

Why are there chapter dues too?

Chapters are automatically added to all dues invoices. Membership is strongly encouraged to help you get involved and network at the local level but is not mandatory. If you do not wish to belong to your chapter, you may remove it online, cross it off the invoice and subtract it from your total, or let the representative know when you call to pay dues.

If my membership lapses, how do I rejoin?

You may have an invoice waiting to be paid. Check your account here. You may rejoin at any time by calling 866-843-2271. Your membership is immediately activated when your payment is processed.

Pediatric Care Online™ is a special benefit for residents supported in part by Mead Johnson Nutrition. And now this access extends one year after training is complete!
