Trauma-Informed Care and Resilience Promotion

Description

Childhood adversities and trauma, which are highly prevalent among the general pediatric population, can negatively affect lifelong health, child development, and social outcomes. This video-based series aims to empower pediatricians and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based, trauma-informed care and resilience promotion in their everyday practice. These comprehensive videos thoroughly review the most common symptoms of trauma, identify strategies for caregivers and physicians to use to promote resilience skills and recognize the developmental and health impacts of trauma, provide guidance on effective screening and surveillance tools, offer techniques for managing trauma symptoms, and suggest when and how to refer or prescribe.

Unit 1 – Overview of Trauma

Learning Objectives

• Describe the long-term physiologic and behavioral effects of repeated trauma.
• Describe the 7 resilience skills that should be supported in children using the THREADS framework.  
• Identify the 6 most common symptoms of trauma using the FRAYED framework.  

Unit 2 – Promoting Resilience

Learning Objectives

• Identify at least three characteristics of a secure attachment between caregivers and children.
• Summarize what it means for a caregiver to “read their child.”
• Describe how parents can build a strong relationship with their child using the “time-in” strategy.  
• Identify three strategies physicians can help a parent use to reassure safety.
• Identify regulation activities to share with caregivers who have difficulty with regulation of self or child.

Unit 3 – Presentations of Trauma

Learning Objectives

• Identify how trauma symptoms present differently based on a child’s developmental level.
• Describe trauma’s impact on developmental skills as they relate to survival and safe attachment.
• Define the role of the default mode network in child development.

Unit 4 – Engagement, Surveillance, and Screening

Learning Objectives

• Describe how neuroception impacts engagement.
• Describe validated screening tools that can help you to identify possible trauma.  
• Describe surveillance practices that can help you to communicate with caregivers regarding trauma.

Unit 5 – Validate and Manage Trauma  

Learning Objectives

• Explain the impact of trauma to families and youth.
• Identify 3 engagement strategies caregivers can use to help children calm their response to stress (3Rs).
• Summarize how caregivers can promote co-regulation, including the powerful benefits of play.

Unit 6 – Referrals and Medication

Learning Objectives  

• Identify 4 evidence-based treatments for childhood trauma.
• Describe 3 elements of trauma-informed treatment.
• Identify when medication is indicated for children exposed to trauma.
