Format
Pediatric tobacco use and nicotine dependence are significant, urgent health concerns. Despite declines in cigarette use, youth still use tobacco and vaping products at high rates. Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is another health risk for youth. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to harms related to SHS as they are still developing. This course educates pediatricians on techniques to screen youth at every visit for vaping/tobacco use and provides those who screen positive with counseling and cessation support. It also educates pediatricians on screening for patient exposure to SHS and how to work with families and caregivers to assist them with tobacco-use prevention and treatment.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to apply knowledge from AAP endorsed guidelines, policy statements, and recommendations for health supervision visits to do the following:
