Description

The goal of this course is to help general pediatricians feel confident and empowered to address mental health concerns that may present in practice. Participants will improve their knowledge and skills regarding early identification and screening, assessment, and ongoing management of mental health conditions in children.

Course Goals and Objectives

The goals of this EQIPP course are to: 

  • Support social, emotional, and behavioral wellness across the lifespan to help families navigate mental health symptoms, conditions, and stressors in a healthy way. 
  • Improve rates of early identification of mental health concerns and emergencies in patients ages 4-18 years old through universal behavioral-social-emotional screening tools and physician assessment.
  • Increase the therapeutic alliance between pediatricians and their families.
  • Support the management of mental health concerns with brief interventions, psychosocial therapy, medication, referrals to mental health professionals and community resources, and close follow-up with the patient. 

Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to apply knowledge from AAP endorsed guidelines, policy statements, and recommendations for health supervision visits to do the following:

  • Identify best practices for the use and documentation of standardized behavioral-social-emotional screening tools for patients ages 4-11 years old, and patients 12-18 years old
  • Share screening results using HELP skills 
  • Establish a shared definition of an emergency within your practice 
  • Develop a standard emergency process for those with an emergency identified
  • Clarify a patient’s presentation using patient history, observation, DSM-5 criteria, and diagnostic screening tools
  • Use brief interventions in the pediatric office setting
  • Determine when to prescribe psychosocial therapy and medication
  • Establish a timeline for follow-up visits
  • Describe best practices in making a referral to a mental health professional or community resources.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This program is accredited for 4.00 NAPNAP CE contact hours of which 0.00 contain pharmacology (Rx) content, (0.00 related to psychopharmacology) (0.00 related to controlled substances), per the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) Continuing Education Guidelines. The AAP is designated as Agency #A17. Upon completion of the program, each participant desiring NAPNAP contact hours must send a completed certificate of attendance to [email protected]. Payment of $15 for NAPNAP members and nonmembers is required via credit card for all NAPNAP contact hour requests. Keep this certificate for your records for six (6) years.
