Food insecurity affects children’s health at many levels, from physical, to mental, to developmental aspects. Across the lifespan, from pregnancy to older adults, food insecurity is associated with worse overall health, impaired chronic disease management, and increased utilization of acute care, which results in increased cost of care. Some of the effects of food insecurity in children are increased risks of birth defects, anemia, cognitive problems, developmental delays, anxiety, and depression. Long-standing, structural racism is a significant cause of inequities experienced by racial and ethnic minorities. This legacy of inequity ultimately propagates disparities in food access and food justice.
This course is designed to educate pediatricians to screen patients for food security at every healthcare visit and address food insecurity for patients who screen positive. The clinical activities in this course will suggest screeners as well as techniques to address food insecurity in clinical settings, educate patients, their families/caregivers, on community resources, and then follow up by verifying patients, families, and caregivers have connected with community resources.
Share Our Strength- No Kid Hungry (SOS)
SOS is an anti-hunger non-profit organization, raising and granting more than $600 million since it’s inception 40 years ago to fund programs designed to help vulnerable children and families. In 2022, AAP & SOS entered into a White House-Highlighted Commitment to offer training to all 67,000 AAP member pediatricians to increase screening and referral for food insecurity. This course will be the cornerstone of ensuring that commitment is achieved.
