The leading cause of postneonatal mortality is sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), a term that encompasses deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB), and ill-defined deaths. Epidemiological studies have revealed modifiable risk factors that may contribute to SUID, and risk reduction is based on elimination of these factors. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations to reduce the risk of SUID, ASSB, and other sleep-related deaths are based on a detailed and impartial analysis of the evidence available on all aspects of infant sleep safety. Unfortunately, safe sleep recommendations do not reach all parents and infant caregivers equally. Although physicians in various specialties and subspecialties demonstrate knowledge of safe infant sleep recommendations, there are variations and inconsistencies in how families are counseled. This course will use quality improvement methods to improve screening and counseling regarding safe infant sleep so all AAP recommendations are consistently delivered to families and caregivers.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to apply knowledge from AAP endorsed guidelines, policy statements, and recommendations for health supervision visits to do the following:
