AAP Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinator Position Summary

A Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinator (CBC) is an ambassador of the Section on Breastfeeding (SOBr). The CBC provides leadership to promote, protect and support breastfeeding in their state and local communities. A CBC works to implement the SOBr strategic plan and fulfill the SOBr mission and vision within their AAP chapter and local community. The CBC Steering Committee supports the CBC. The Chief CBC reports to the SOBr Executive Committee.

Membership Requirements

  • Must be a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Must be a member of the AAP Section on Breastfeeding (SOBr)
  • Must be approved as a representative of their AAP Chapter by the chapter leadership

Duties

  • Promotes breastfeeding activities statewide as a liaison between local AAP chapter and AAP SOBr. Examples of activities include dissemination of SOBr resources, policies and activities to their local chapter members
  • Attend and participate in biannual virtual CBC Spring and Fall meetings
  • Submit an annual report to the CBC Steering Committee by completing survey on breastfeeding related projects and activities.

Specific Objectives

The CBC will work to help achieve as many of these goals as possible but is not expected to be able to complete all of them. Below are examples of suggested activities:

Advocacy

Conduct activities that promote, protect, and support breastfeeding.

  • Collaborate with AAP Chapter to promote breastfeeding as an integral part of state level advocacy (e.g., write an Op Ed, testify to state representatives)
  • Support and promote activities sponsored by their state or local breastfeeding coalition Find your state coalition
  • Share policy documents and resources that serve to improve breastfeeding support along the continuum of care (Link to resources)
  • Promote August as National Breastfeeding Month (e.g., write an article for your chapter newsletter, promote local breastfeeding coalition activities; get state governor to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month)

Education

Engage in the creation and/or dissemination of breastfeeding educational resources

  • Collaborate with AAP Chapter to offer at least 1 hour of breastfeeding CME per year as an integral part of educational programming (e.g., meetings, conferences, QI/MOC projects)
  • Apply for a SoBr Lectureship grant or other similar grants to support the above objective
  • Educate trainees, physicians and other healthcare providers using the Breastfeeding Curriculum (Beastfeeding Curriculum)

Membership

Build a strong and vibrant SOBr Membership.

  • Actively recruit eligible friends and colleagues from all subspecialties to join the Section on Breastfeeding
  • Connect with other Section on Breastfeeding members in your Chapter.
