The Section on Global Health (SOGH) is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of children globally—particularly those living in low-resource settings—through impact-oriented education, advocacy and service delivery. As part of our mission, each year, the SOGH offers travel awards for Low/Middle Income Country (LMIC) first authors who will be presenting an accepted abstract at the SOGH Program during the AAP National Conference & Exhibition. We know that the financial burden of traveling internationally is a major barrier to attending the conference, and ensuring our LMIC colleagues can participate in person and share their important work is of utmost importance to the SOGH and our members.
As one of our past recipients, Dr. Lily Okeyo from Kenya stated:
“I was able to meet colleagues in the adolescent health field that we have connected and worked with post the conference. Out of this, I was invited to present another abstract at the Society for Adolescent Health Uganda Conference 2024. I learnt from other presentations and was able to borrow some ideas that improved our care programs for adolescents in western Kenya. Giving opportunities and awards like these to deserving individuals from LMICs goes a long way in creating lasting impact in their lives and generating subsequent opportunities for them.”

Another recipient, Dr. Deogratius Bakulumpagi from Uganda, reflected:
“Receiving the SOGH Travel Award to attend the AAP NCE and present my abstract was a pivotal moment in my professional journey. This opportunity allowed me to share my work and experiences as a general practitioner and medical officer in Uganda, where I dedicated eight years to pediatric hematology-oncology service at the national hospital. Being able to present at such a prestigious conference not only validated my efforts but also provided me with an international platform to highlight the challenges and triumphs of working in a resource-limited setting. The exposure to new ideas, research, and collaborations has significantly broadened my perspective and enriched my approach to pediatric care. The award was a catalyst for my professional development, and I am deeply grateful for the support that has enabled me to contribute more effectively to the field of pediatric healthcare both in Uganda and now in the United States.”

Please help us in continuing to support these scholarships that highlight the important work of our LMIC colleagues. Your donations will help cover a portion of the costs of registration, airfare, accommodations, meals and transport for our award recipients, estimated to total about $5,000 per recipient. Every contribution is valuable, no matter the amount!
