Caring for Gender-Diverse Youth, Identifying Developmental Delays in Refugee Children – Episode 65

Dr. Ilana Sherer is a general pediatrician at Palo Alto Medical Foundation/Sutter Health in Dublin, CA, where she cares for children from birth through college. She coordinates pediatric transgender health care for Sutter throughout the bay area, caring for patients within her own practice as well as training other clinicians to provide gender-competent care. She is a founding member of the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center, which she helped to create out of a need for improved care within the health system a decade ago. She serves on the AAP's Executive Committee for LGBTQ Health and Wellness, where she contributes to policy and clinical practice reports and creates educational content for providers and patients. She also is the mom of two young children and a klezmer violinist.

Dr. Rebecca Scharf has a background in pediatrics, child development, psychology and epidemiology. She is on faculty at the University of Virginia in the Center for Global Health to study cognitive and developmental outcomes of children with malnutrition and enteric disease around the world. At UVA Children’s Hospital Dr. Scharf sees patients in five clinics: 1) Myelomeningocele/Spina Bifida, 2) Neuromuscular/Muscular Dystrophy/Spinal Muscular Atrophy, 3) International Child Development/Refugee, 4) Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Congenital Cardiac Disease, and 5) Cerebral Palsy. Dr. Scharf enjoys teaching medical students about childhood disability and global health.
