Discover how the American Academy of Pediatrics' March 2025 Virtual Youth Forum united over 80 teens and young adults (ages 14–24) to discuss the impact of social media on youth mental health.
Virtual Youth Forum Overview
In March 2025, the American Academy of Pediatrics hosted a two-day Virtual Youth Forum bringing together teens and young adults ages 14–24 to explore how social media affects youth mental health. Over 80 participants joined from across the US and internationally, representing a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
Participants also competed in trivia challenges about social media and mental health, with winners walking away with prizes. In addition, a week-long contest encouraged youth to submit positive social media images, further promoting a healthy digital environment.
Contestants were invited to get creative and inspire positive digital habits by submitting a slogan, visual (such as artwork or a graphic), or video. Entries encouraged the positive use of social media, for example, promoting kindness, learning, digital citizenship, self-care, online safety, and more. Participants could also combine a slogan with a visual, as long as their message was clear and uplifting. View the contest submissions below.
Social Media Strategies in Action
Here are some quotes and thoughts from attendees.
“I plan to make changes by remembering to use tools like resetting my FYP or blocking things that do not bring me joy/educate me in any way. It’s important to me to tailor my social media to things that serve me.”
“I will encourage my peers to review the settings on their phone and ask them to think critically about how they are using their phones and social media.”
“I will create healthy digital spaces in my community by using social media to share current events in the community that helps mental wellness and advocacy of important policies.”
