Learners begin by taking the adaptive eLearning (called the Online Learning Assessment). The Essentials Online Learning Assessment takes anywhere from less than 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the learner's knowledge of the content in Lessons 1 through 4. Those taking the Advanced curriculum then need to complete the Advanced Online Learning Assessment.
Class length totally depends on the instructor : learner ratio (recommended as 1 instructor: 3-4 learners), the resources available for allowing people to practice skills (waiting for their turn vs. being able to practice simultaneously), and the learners’ current skill levels.
An Essentials instructor-led course with skills review, practice scenarios, and sim/debriefing typically takes about 2 hours.
An Advanced instructor-led provider course (skills in Lessons 5 through 7) in the Sequential Practice and Evaluation format, should take 1.5 - 2 hours, again, depending on the variables mentioned above.

Prior to the renewal date, NRP providers are required to complete Part 1 of the NRP Provider Course (the Essentials Online Learning Assessment and, for Advanced Providers, the Advanced Online Learning Assessment), then attend an Instructor-led Event. To access the NRP 8th edition Provider curricula, first create an account or log into the 8th edition Learning Platform: https://www.nrplearningplatform.com/
You can then purchase either the Essentials or Advanced curriculum from the catalog, or your institution can assign it to you.
Step by step videos on use of the Learning Platform are available on the 8th edition Updates page of the NRP website.
-
The NRP does not charge any fees to institutions conducting courses, nor do we charge for the NRP Provider or Instructor cards.
Any fees assessed by an institution are at their discretion of the Instructor and/or institution that they feel are needed to compensate for space, equipment use, and Instructor time.
-
To locate a receipt for purchasing any 8th edition curriculum, log into your account in the NRP Learning Platform. On your home dashboard there is a link under "Quick Links" to view your order history. Click "view details" to download or print your receipt.

Upon completing Part 1 of the 8th Edition NRP Provider Curriculum (Essentials or Advanced), Providers have 90 days to complete an Instructor-Led Event.
-
There are 2 options for 8th edition Providers: Essentials or Advanced. The NRP Essentials course (Textbook lessons 1 through 4) is suitable for anyone involved in the care of a newborn. NRP Advanced (Textbook lessons 1 through 11) may be appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for anticipated resuscitation of the newborn with known risk factors and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive-pressure ventilation. To enroll in one of these curricula, follow the steps below:
- Visit www.aap.org/nrp, scroll down to the “NRP 8th ed Learning Platform” bar and click the “Login” button.
- Create an account by clicking “Register Now”
- Once logged in, go to the Catalog and enroll in the appropriate curriculum.
- You can find instructional videos on using the system here: NRP 8th Edition Updates (aap.org)
-
After completing Part 1 of the NRP Provider Curriculum, the student has 90 days in which to complete the Instructor-Led Event in Part 2. If the event is not completed after 90 days, the student will have to re-enroll in the NRP Provider Curriculum and take Part 1 again. The NRP Provider Curriculum is non refundable.
If there are extenuating circumstances, an instructor may make an exception to the 90-day rule and allow a student to take an Instructor-Led Event if this time limit has passed. This exception should be made at the instructor’s discretion and should not exceed one week. Extensions to provider expiration dates are not possible.

The NRP Provider course requirements include an online exam, skills evaluation, and simulation and debriefing.
The NRP 8th edition suggests the use of two course formats, suitable for Essentials and Advanced learners.
Provider Course Format #1: Sequential Practice and Evaluation
- This format is most appropriate for new NRP learners and those who infrequently use NRP Essentials or Advanced skills.
- In this format, learners will sequentially review and practice the skills from each lesson within the Essentials or Advanced curriculum with the instructor.
- At the end of each lesson, the instructor uses the NRP Practice Scenarios in the textbook to evaluate the learner’s ability to lead their team through the resuscitation in the correct sequence and perform the relevant technical skills. Each Practice Scenario builds on the knowledge and skills from previous lessons, giving the instructor an opportunity to observe each learner lead their team through a series of scenarios of increasing complexity.
- When the learner has completed all Practice Scenarios in their course without requiring significant corrections/coaching, they have successfully passed the final component of evaluation in the NRP Provider Course and may proceed to Simulation and Debriefing.
Provider Course Format #2: Comprehensive Skills Test (“test out”)
- Provider Course participants who resuscitate newborns frequently and are experts at resuscitation (Essentials or Advanced skills) may “test out” of the sequential practice and evaluation course by leading their team of participants (who are probably also testing out) through at least one NRP algorithm sequence and performing role-relevant skills.
- The Comprehensive Skills Test requires a team resuscitation and is not a one-person “check-off.”
- Testing out of complex resuscitation skills is not appropriate for health care professionals who rarely participate in complex resuscitation. In hospitals where complex resuscitation is an uncommon occurrence, it is possible that no one will be eligible to test out of the skills in Lessons 5 through 7.
- Learners who successfully “test out” have passed the final evaluation point of the NRP Provider Course and may proceed to Simulation and Debriefing.
- Learners who make significant errors and require coaching during the scenario(s) should be directed to their hospital NRP remediation plan or to the Provider Course that uses the sequential practice and evaluation format.
- This format is not designed to be a “short course.” For expert resuscitators who test out, the simulation and debriefing component is an opportunity to practice challenging scenarios that require critical thinking and effective teamwork and communication. What scenarios do they find most stressful? What NRP Key Behavioral Skills are lacking in clinical practice? Simulation and Debriefing is the safe place to take on these challenges.
NRP instructors are not required to offer the Comprehensive Skills Test (Testing Out) format.
-
NRP Instructors schedule their own classes. There are over 20,000 instructors nationwide. The NRP Learning Platform provides a master calendar of Instructor-led events on which Instructors can add their event. Once you start the online learning assessment portion of the provider curriculum, you will be prompted to "Register for Event." Clicking on this will take you to the master calendar where you can filter by location to show all of the available events in your area.
Please note, some events are intended for hospital employees only, at the discretion of the hospitals and the instructors. We recommend you reach out to the instructor prior to the event to confirm you are able to attend.
If you have difficulty locating an Instructor-led Event through this search feature, you can email [email protected] with your contact information, city, and state. We will forward your request to instructors in your area to see if they can assist in locating an event you can attend.
-
- The course has been divided into two provider levels: Essentials and Advanced provider
- Essentials covers lessons 1 through 4 of the textbook. Anyone involved in the care of a newborn should take NRP Essentials. The NRP 8th edition Essentials curriculum includes use of the laryngeal mask and orogastric tube. Each facility may determine if the NRP Essentials provider is also responsible for CPAP administration in the delivery room. The NRP Essentials learner may study additional lessons for knowledge enhancement (lessons 5 through 11 and supplemental lessons 12 through 14) but will not be tested on that material.
- Advanced covers lessons 1 through 11 of the textbook and Advanced is appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for anticipated resuscitation of a newborn with known risk factors, and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive pressure ventilation.
- Your facility may not have a staff large enough to accommodate NRP Essentials and Advanced providers. If most staff participate in births with risk factors and are called to assist with complex resuscitations, only a small number of select staff with limited responsibilities may be suited to NRP Essentials.
- The course now has two delivery formats: Instructor Led and RQI for NRP
- Instructor-led (traditional) NRP Provider Courses are familiar to experienced NRP learners as in-person group training sessions where learners may practice and review resuscitation skills, demonstrate knowledge of the NRP algorithm sequence, use correct hands-on techniques, and participate in the simulation and debriefing course component to improve teamwork and communication. The Instructor-led format uses a 2-year cycle of completing an online component and a hands-on instructor-led component.
- RQI for NRP is a self-directed learning program that uses low-dose, high-frequency quarterly learning and skills sessions to cover the content of NRP Essentials. In hospitals that use RQI for NRP, Advanced providers will maintain their Essentials provider status by completing short (10-15 minutes) quarterly cognitive and skill-based practice sessions at a simulation station located in their hospital and renew their Advanced provider status at an instructor-led course every two years.
- The course has been divided into two provider levels: Essentials and Advanced provider
-
Each organization will determine its own policy for who should attain NRP Essentials or NRP Advanced provider status. Ideally, this policy should be written before NRP 8th edition Provider Courses begin. Anyone who is involved in the care of a newborn should take NRP Essentials. NRP Advanced is appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for anticipated resuscitation of a newborn with known risk factors, and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive-pressure ventilation.
The AAP will not deter any NRP learner from taking either course option. If a healthcare professional is unsure about which NRP level to take, they should probably take NRP Advanced and should check with their institution.
Anyone wishing to become an NRP Instructor candidate must have a current NRP 8th Edition Advanced provider card.
-
Instructor Led is the “traditional” format NRP course. The instructor-led course includes The Online Learning Assessment and NRP Advanced Online Learning Assessment (if applicable), and the in person Instructor-led Event.
RQI for NRP is a quality improvement program for institutions. The program allows learners to complete NRP Essentials via a self-directed curriculum with quarterly activities to reinforce and master key NRP knowledge and NRP Essentials skills at a simulation station. RQI for NRP is an alternative to Instructor Led (traditional) NRP training.
