Accreditation Designation Statements

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Who can earn credit?

Physicians

The AAP designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Credit amounts per chapter vary, completion of the entire book allows users the opportunity to earn a total of 93 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

This enduring material is acceptable for a maximum of 2 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the American Academy of Pediatrics..

Credit amounts per chapter vary, completion of the entire book allows users the opportunity to earn a total of 93 AAP credits.

Nurse Practitioners

This program is accredited for 2.0 National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) CE contact hours, of which 0 contain pharmacology (Rx), (0 related to psychopharmacology) (0 related to controlled substance), content per the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) Continuing Education Guidelines.

Credit amounts per chapter vary, completion of the entire book allows users the opportunity to earn a total of 93 NAPNAP CE contact hours.

Physician Assistants

PAs may claim a maximum of 2.0 Category 1 credits for completing this activity. NCCPA accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM from organizations accredited by the ACCME or a recognized state medical society.

Credit amounts per chapter vary, completion of the entire book allows users the opportunity to earn a total of 93 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Certified Counselors

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEPTM) (Provider number 6620) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. This program is approved for up to 52.25 clock hours. Certified Health Education Specialists

This curriculum was reviewed by the American School Health Association (ASHA) and has been approved for up to 62.25 entry level and 20.5 advanced level CECH for a total of 82.75 hours for CHES and MCHES. Purpose of Course

This program teaches youth-serving professionals how to incorporate positive youth development, resilience, open communication, support, strength-based approaches, trauma-sensitive practices, and youth health. In helping multiple types of health care providers, including counselors, nurses, doctors, social workers, and others; we are furthering the AAP mission of attaining optimal health and well-being for children, adolescents, and young adults.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to…

  • Incorporate the Positive youth development and resilience frameworks into clinical care.
  • Understand how to foster open communication with an adolescent by forming a therapeutic, trustworthy relationship with teens and their families.
  • Better support effective parenting measures regarding discipline, motoring, and guiding their children.
  • Better support youth toward making behavioral choices in their lives that will promote their health and well-being.
  • Assess youth for risk while incorporating a strengths-based and trauma-sensitive approach.
  • Implement a stress reduction plan with adolescent patients.
  • Better support the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of youth.
  • Better address the special needs of distinct adolescent populations.
  • Consider how self-care for the provider may position him or her to better serve children, adolescents, and their families, over the long term

The AAP is committed to providing learners with commercially unbiased CME activities.

All AAP CME activities will strictly adhere to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education. In accordance with these Standards, the following decisions will be made free of the control of an ineligible company: identification of CME needs, determination of educational objectives, selection and presentation of content, selection of all persons and organizations that will be in a position to control the content, selection of educational methods, and evaluation of the CME activity.

Method of Participation, Minimum Performance Level, and Credit Claiming

Participants will read the text via print book or online, and watch the video clips and take the chapter quizzes using the Internet. Upon completing each credit-bearing chapter, participants will complete a quiz based on the content. Quizzes range from 5 to 15 questions, depending on the amount of credit available – there are 10 questions for each hour of credit, and a minimum passing score of 80% or higher is required to receive CME credit for this activity. Upon submission of each quiz and verification of the 80% minimum passing score requirement, participants will receive instructions for claiming credit with the relevant institutional body or professional association.

Each chapter should take approximately one hour to complete per credit hour.

CLAIMING YOUR CREDITS AND PRINTING CERTIFICATES

The online AAP Transcript System is the official way to claim credit and print certificates for all AAP CME Activities and access transcripts. Credits must be claimed within one (1) year of the CME activity’s end-date.

All participants must claim their credit online by completing the easy to follow steps below. You also have the option to print a copy of your certificate. Individual or paper certificates will not be distributed to you post-activity. Please Note: If you need additional assistance a detailed instructional document can be found on the transcript homepage.

Claim Credit:

1. Log on to http://transcript.aap.org with your Email and Password.

a. Note: If you are already logged into PediaLink (www.pedialink.org), click on the Continuing Education tab then the CME Transcript button to access the transcript site and continue to step 2.

2. Next to the activity, click the Claim CME or Claim AAP Credit Only link and enter the total number of credits you are claiming, commensurate with the extent of your participation in the activity.

3. Click the Confirm Claiming box to complete claiming process – after you have claimed your credit, you can click the print certificate link or go back to your list of activities.

Non-AAP Members: Please follow the above steps to claim your credits and print a certificate. If you do not have a PediaLink account, you may create one by going to www.pedialink.org, click the link Don’t Know Your Login?, click the link Create an Account, and follow the instructions to setup an account..

Continuing Education Quizzes

Click on the chapter number below to launch the corresponding continuing education quiz. You will be asked to enter your AAP ID and password before taking the quiz (if not already logged in), which will be used to record your results. If you do not have an AAP ID and password, you will have the option to create one. (NOTE: There are no quizzes for Chapters 1 and 10. Chapters 7, 94, and 95 are not eligible for certified counselor clock hours.)

Anyone who holds a state professional license, other credential and is required to complete/maintain a certain amount of continuing education is reminded to verify with their board, other entity for requirements. Fees for claiming or recording credit, if any, are the responsibility of the learner, and not AAP.
